God’s first chosen people were Jewish people from Israel. 1 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 1 Peter 2:1–12 describes the spiritual house God is building. Jesus is the perfect foundation stone God has chosen for the house. Those who trust in Him are also living stones used to build the house. In addition, we individually serve as both the priests and the spiritual sacrifices, our lives offered to the builder. Thus we must live good lives, as strangers in the world preparing to go home to be with our Father, engaged in battle against our desire to sin.
In contrast with those who reject Christ, those who are the chosen people of God.
Peter uses language that had been used to describe God’s special relationship with Israel. As Israel was chosen race, now all New believers, God’s Church are also a chosen race. Unlike Israel, though, we are not a race in the sense of our family, ethnicity, skin color, or country of origin. We are a spiritual race, in the sense that, through accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we share a single spiritual Heavenly Father. In that same meaning, we are a “Holy Nation,” a specific group of people called out and set apart from all other nations.
Christians, together, are a royal Priesthood. In Israel, under the Law, one tribe was given the task of serving as Priests, performing the duties of mediators between God and the rest of the nation. Only a select few could hold the honor and responsibility of actually coming into God’s presence, without instantly dying. But in and through what Jesus Christ, did dying in our place, taking our punishment. Now all believers are Priests who can come in direct access to our Father. We need no other mediator, we no longer need new atonement through Animal blood and sacrifices for our sins, Jesus Christ died once for everyone, Praise you thank you Lord God.
Finally, God has formed this nation, this race, this priesthood to take possession of us. We are His people in a very real way. It’s not just that we pledge our allegiance to Him; it’s that He has taken ownership of us. We belong to Him. Why? For many reasons, a couple totally mentioned in John 3:14-17 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
He has made us to declare His praises. That’s more than just a natural response to our Father’s mercy or something we should do to be polite. Declaring God’s greatness is one reason for our very existence. When we praise Him, we fulfill our purpose. He has called us out of the darkness of a meaningless life, and an eternity apart from Him, and into His wonderful, marvelous light. Because we belong to Him, we belong in His light. God does not want anyone Born to die without becoming saved, so they can spend Eternity in Heaven with Him, God really does Love and desire each and everyone of us. But just because God loves us He can not let sinners be around Him. So no matter why anyone would want to selfishly ignore the true reasons why unless you become Born Again, by asking Jesus Christ to become your Lord and Savior. Nothing else you or anyone could do will help you go to Heaven.
